How Server Sections Work

Set up your team and let the system handle the rest

1 Quick Setup

Add Your Servers

Create profiles for each server with their name and optional color coding for easy identification on the floor plan.

Assign Tables to Sections

Group tables into sections on your floor plan. Each section can be assigned to a specific server for the shift.

Set Your Rotation Method

Choose automatic rotation (round-robin based on covers served) or manual assignment for full control.

2 During Service

See Who's Up

The system tracks cover counts and shows which server should get the next table based on fair rotation.

One-Tap Assignment

When seating guests, the server is suggested automatically. Accept it or override when needed.

Track Performance

See real-time stats: covers served, table count, and turn times for each server during the shift.

3 Ways to Rotate

Choose the rotation method that works best for your restaurant

Guest Count

Rotate based on total covers served. The server with the fewest guests gets the next table.

Best for: Balancing tip potential when party sizes vary widely

Example: Server A has 8 guests, Server B has 12. A party of 4 walks in → goes to Server A.

Party / Table Count

Rotate based on number of tables served, regardless of party size. Equal table distribution.

Best for: Restaurants where party sizes are similar or workload matters more than covers

Example: Server A has 3 tables, Server B has 4. Next table goes to Server A regardless of party size.

POPULAR

Smart Cycle

Pure rotation order, but intelligently adjusts the queue based on guest count from low to high.

Best for: Fair turn-based rotation while still accounting for cover imbalances

Example: Maintains rotation order (A→B→C) but reorders queue so servers with fewer guests go first.

Switch anytime

You can change rotation methods mid-shift if needed. The system recalculates instantly based on current cover counts.

Section Management Features

Auto Rotation

System automatically suggests the next server based on who has the fewest covers. Fair by default.

Color-Coded Sections

Each server gets a unique color. See at a glance whose section is whose on the floor plan.

Live Cover Counts

Track covers served per server in real-time. Everyone can see the counts are fair.

Shift Management

Easily add or remove servers during a shift as staff clock in and out. Sections adjust automatically.

Manual Override

Sometimes you need to skip rotation for guest requests. Easy override when needed, logged for transparency.

Activity Log

Every assignment is logged. Review who sat what and when if questions come up later.

Why Fair Rotation Matters

Happier Staff

When servers trust the system is fair, morale improves. Less drama, better teamwork.

Lower Turnover

Staff leave when they feel unfairly treated. Transparent rotation helps retain good servers.

Better Guest Service

Balanced sections mean no server is overwhelmed. Every guest gets proper attention.

Manager Relief

Stop being the referee. Let the system handle rotation so you can focus on operations.

Equal Earning Opportunity

Fair rotation means fair tips. Every server gets their shot at good tables.

Complete Transparency

Everyone can see the stats. No more accusations of favoritism.

Server Sections FAQ

What rotation modes are available?

Simple Host offers three rotation modes: Guest Count (rotates based on total covers served), Party/Table Count (rotates based on number of tables), and Smart Cycle (maintains turn order but prioritizes servers with fewer guests). You can switch modes anytime.

How do I assign tables to server sections?

In the floor plan editor, tap any table and assign it to a server or section. Each server gets a unique color, so you can see at a glance which tables belong to which section. Reassign tables anytime during service.

Can servers see their cover counts?

Yes. Cover counts are displayed in real-time for all servers. Everyone can see the rotation is fair, which eliminates arguments about who's getting more tables.

What if a guest requests a specific server?

You can override the rotation anytime. When seating a guest, simply select the requested server instead of accepting the suggested one. The override is logged for transparency.

How do I add or remove servers during a shift?

Tap the server management panel to add servers when they clock in or remove them when they leave. The rotation automatically adjusts—remaining servers continue from their current cover counts.

Does server rotation work with reservations?

Yes. When a reservation arrives and you seat them, the system suggests which server should take the table based on your rotation mode. The covers are added to that server's count automatically.

Can I see server performance statistics?

Yes. Track covers served, table count, and average turn times per server during each shift. Historical data is available in the Statistics section to review performance over time.

Is the activity log available for rotation disputes?

Yes. Every table assignment, override, and server change is logged with timestamps. If questions come up later, you can review exactly who was assigned what table and when.
